Mali, once West Africa's greatest merchant empire, conjures up a spirit of adventure, of tiny villages and encounters with tribal peoples. Visit the fabled oasis of Timbuktu, then board a pinasse for a 3-day cruise down the Niger River to Mopti. Then do a 5-day foot safari into wild Dogon country and marvel at the medieval mud town of Djenne.
